SB 969 Battery Backup
LBattery Backup Information
California Senate Bill 969
Signed on September 21, 2018
In effect July 1, 2019
On September 21, 2018, Former Governor Jerry Brown signed SB-969 into law. This bill requires that all newly sold or installed garage door openers in residential buildings in California must have battery backup starting July 1, 2019. In 2017 California experienced one of the most damaging fire seasons in its history, with over 1,500,000 acres burning. Following this fire season, legislation was passed to allow residents to be able to use their garage doors via battery backup in case of power outage or fire, to ensure that no more residents would become trapped due to not being able to open their doors in case of emergency.
What you need to know:
-
This law applies to new garage door and garage door opener installations in California residences.
-
Any company violating this will receive a civil penalty of $1000.00 per opener installed and operational.
-
On or after July 1st, 2019, no person, corporation, or entity shall manufacture for sale in California, offer for sale, sell, wholesale, or install a residential garage door opener in California that does not have the battery backup.
